DAMAGED GOODS (Album) - KANZU

In the current climate of music, it feels as though a considerable portion of new releases are designed to be marketable – to fit some sort of “mold” that will be palatable for a large base of listeners, which often strengthens my appreciation for those who make a hard left when everyone else goes right. ⛔️ And Kanzu’s new album “Damaged Goods” is a considerable veer in the right direction, as with eight tracks in total, the project comprises of some of the most dexterous, playful and out of the box music that can either be the soundtrack to a party or even the playlist for a good amount of personal introspection. ✅ For instance, some of the tracks like “It’s Tricky” and “uBarbie” are made using an odd and colorful assortment of complex and enjoyable melodies over heavy and sonically busy beats, carrying with them some of the most eclectic sounds and flows I have heard in a long time, that are not only addictive but even downright psychedelic. 💊 But the highlight for me is the penultimate track “Nivunje”, which is a melancholic, slow-paced ballad that uses an instrumental unlike anything else you’ll hear on this project. 💭 It almost immediately elevated my mood to the point I would even call the song angelic, and if you listen closely enough, he really speaks on some personal topics that are both attention grabbing, relatable and extremely heartfelt, making it, as well as “When I’m Gone”, two of the most well-written and well-produced cuts from the project. 🔀 Frankly, this project really exceeded my expectations, as it is undoubtedly full of memorable songs that will connect with many people in very different ways. 💯 It also shows an unwavering attention to detail as well as an extremely wide sonic range that many artists will often struggle to match. 📝 I’ve already ran through this entire tracklist a handful of times and I can honestly say it is one of the best underground projects to be featured here. 🏆 With such an impressive foundation as his first solo release, there really is nowhere else to go but up. 📈
